Climbing up on the roof to check for a problem can be dangerous, and you might miss something important if you don’t know what to look for. There are, however, some simple ways to inspect your own roof and assess its condition.
Walk around Your House and Look at the Roof
Some signs of roof damage are obvious and can easily be spotted from the ground. For instance, you may see shingles that are missing, loose, curling, or buckling, or you may note that a section of the roof is sagging. If so, it’s time to hire a roofing company to make repairs.
Check the Flashing
Areas where there are protrusions from the roof, such as chimneys, vents, and skylights, need flashing around them to prevent leaks. When you walk around your house, look at the condition of the flashing. If you notice any places where it appears loose or damaged, that can be a sign that your roof needs repairs.
Make Sure the Gutters Are Secure
Your gutters perform an essential job – they carry water off the roof and away from the house. If the gutters are loose or falling down, they can’t divert water, and the roof can be susceptible to leaks. Look at the gutters and shake the downspouts a little to see if they are securely attached.
Look for Water Damage Inside the House
Even if you don’t see water pouring in, your roof may be leaking, and water may be causing damage inside. Inspect the attic for signs of a problem, such as warped wood, damaged drywall or insulation, wet boxes and other belongings, and mold or mildew.
Check for Light Shining in
You may be able to see light outside your house through gaps in the roof. Go up to the attic during the day, turn off the lights, and check carefully for any areas where you see sunlight poking through. That’s a sign that your home needs roof repairs.
