winter storms and your roof

winter storms and your roof Winter weather can wreak havoc on roofs. If you’re a Pennsylvania homeowner, here are some things you need to know about winter storms and your roof and where to turn if you need help.

How Winter Weather Can Damage Your Roof

There are several ways that a storm can create problems with your roof during the winter. You might encounter more than one of these issues at the same time.

If several inches of snow pile up and you don’t clear the roof, the weight can take a toll. The roof might sag, or even collapse, under the weight. The danger is particularly high if the roof already had damage that you didn’t know about or if you neglected routine maintenance and repairs.

Water from snow and ice can creep under shingles, rot wood supporting structures, and damage insulation. If water leaks into the living area, it can damage or destroy drywall, flooring, furniture, artwork, electronics, and other belongings.

If shingles are already loose or damaged, there’s a high risk that water from a winter storm will cause damage. Even if your roof is in good condition prior to a storm, strong wind can loosen or tear off shingles and create pathways for water to reach places where you don’t want it to go.

A strong gust of wind can also cause branches, and even entire trees, to topple onto your house. If that happens, it might be possible to make repairs, or the roof might be so badly compromised that it must be replaced.

Where to Get Professional Help with Winter Storms and Your Roof

If your roof gets damaged by a winter storm, the issue may or may not be obvious. It’s hard to miss a tree lying on top of the house or a major roof leak, but you might not notice damaged or missing shingles unless you take the time to look for them. After a winter storm, walk around your house and check for any signs of a problem.

Don’t try to climb on the roof, especially if it’s covered with snow or ice. Use binoculars to spot problems from the ground.
